Some 200 Maria Carrillo students wore T-shirts Thursday night that read simply: "We Believe." On the other side of the gym, a like number of Piner students wore T-shirts imprinted with, "Believe the Hype."

 

With a possible share of first place at stake, the "Believe the Hype" proved to be the winning slogan.  ARTICLE HERE

ARCATA -- It is often said that in high school sports, the team that “wants it more” will come out on top.

But in reality, sometimes it's the team with the long-armed 6-foot-7 center that holds up the championship trophy of its opponents' tournament, as Piner did after beating Arcata 58-38 to win the 40th annual Jerry Paul Classic Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

The finishing touch

Both the Eureka and McKinleyville boys basketball teams are somewhat inexperienced this season.

In other games at the tournament, Fortuna beat Anderson 71-42, Piner outscored Franklin 66-58 and Arcata beat Red Bluff 51-47.

Luke Devenny, Piner's premier center, is very familiar with El Cerrito's all-league center Daymon Warren. The two have squared off a number of times in AAU play.
